Constipation is extremely common as 1 in 10 people in the UK are believed to experience it on a regular basis.

Constipation can cause stomach pain and bloating and a feeling that your bowels have not completely emptied after a movement. A healthy bowel should be cleared regularly, although everybody has different bowel habits, a change in less frequent bowel movements could lead to constipation.

Regular bowel movement is important for the excretion of toxins.

The most common causes of constipation are:
– A diet that is low in fibre
– Poor hydration
– Limited physical activity
– Dysbiosis (imbalance of good and bad bacteria)
– Mineral deficiencies
– Side effects from iron supplements and some medications

Also several diseases, such as: underactive thyroid, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, coeliac disease, kidney disease and haemorrhoids, may cause constipation.

Proper nutrition and some lifestyle changes may really alleviate the symptoms of constipation and help you re-gain a healthy bowel habit.
